Michiko Nakamura

After graduating from the Musashino Art University in Japan, Michiko has created ceramic art pieces in her own inimitable and immediately recognizable style. Michiko has achieved widespread success and recognition of her work in a great number of exhibitions, including:

  • George R. Gardner Museum of Ceramic Art, Toronto
  • Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre, Toronto
  • Kampo cultural Centre, New York City
  • Gallery Mai, Tokyo

She has lectured extensively at a large number of institutions including The Royal Ontario Museum and the George R. Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art in Toronto, University of Ottawa and Musashino Art University in Tokyo.

Michiko continues to develop new techniques as well as employing the traditional methods of ceramic production. As well as electric and gas kiln firing, Michiko also uses the centuries old technique of wood firing to produce pieces of incomparable beauty and elegance.

All her creations are strongly grounded in nature and natural elements, including the use of wood ash from her fireplace and natural clay and sand from local sources. Her pieces are in many private collections.
