Hassell was born in Lachine Quebec, and studied at the Ontario College of Art under J.W.Beatty, J.E.H. Macdonald and F.H. Johnston, also in England at Heatherley's School.
Known for his landscapes and figures in oils, watercolours and acrylics. Two favoured haunts of the artist were Newfoundland and Ireland, where he gleaned much from the landscape and people. He also painted in Nova Scotia, Sussex, England and New England as well as other Canadian provinces and the Arctic. He exhibited in Eaton’s in Toronto and Winnipeg in the mid '60's,RCA 1936-66 and Montreal Museum of Fine Art 1960 & 61, and Memorial University Art Gallery 1965.
