Metis Uprising

In Saskatchewan in 1885 there was a brief and unsuccessful uprising by the Metis people under Louis Riel and an associated uprising by First Nations Cree and Assiniboine against the Government of Canada

Many Métis felt their land and their survival as a distinct people were in danger and Riel was invited to lead the movement of protest. He turned it into a military action and had the allegiance of a couple of hundred armed Métis, a smaller number of other Indigenous warriors, confronting 900 Canadian militia plus some armed local residents. About 91 people would die in the fighting that occurred that spring, before the rebellion's collapse.

Victories and Defeats

Despite some notable early victories at Duck Lake, Fish Creek and Cut Knife the rebellion ended when the Métis were defeated at the Battle of Batoche. The remaining Aboriginal allies scattered. Riel was captured and put on trial. He was convicted of treason and was hanged.

The Riel Rebellion Collection

We have a wonderful collection of original illustrations, many hand tinted. These items are a visual and valuable pictorial of Canadian history. All of the pieces are from the Riel Rebellion period and are also a reflection of life in the era and an illustration of how Canadians received their news at that time.
